Event: Focused Group Discussion on English Language Teaching. Organised by: Cambridge University Press and Assessment. Date: 2nd August, 2025. Time: 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Venue: Taj Bengal, Kolkata. Representative Teachers: Mrs Rose Nandi and Mr Supratik Mukherjee. On 2nd August 2025, a Cambridge education programme held in Kolkata focused on empowering educators through reflective teaching practices and future-ready strategies. The session emphasized professionalism and accountability, urging teachers to take responsibility for both the success and failure of their students. Teachers were reminded to be proud professionals who constantly update themselves to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world. The programme highlighted the importance of understanding 21st-century learners—curious, critical, and digitally inclined—requiring educators to adopt data-driven, engaging, and student-centered approaches. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were linked to competency-based education, urging a shift from Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) as outlined in Bloom’s Taxonomy. The concept of active classrooms was promoted, where teachers act as mentors, guiding students through inquiry-based learning. Experiential, multi-disciplinary methods—such as integrating maths, language, history, and science into real-world projects—were strongly encouraged. In the English Language session, effective communication and functional grammar were prioritized over rote learning. A powerful exercise using the “Quit India Movement" Fresco by Beohar Rammanohar Sinha helped participants create meaningful questions and apply Bloom’s stages. Overall, the programme inspired educators to embrace innovation and collaboration, preparing students for a complex, globalized future through responsible, reflective, and integrative teaching.
